You can describe West Ham United in many ways: one can say it’s the working-class people's club, other may talk about its East London roots, the harsh background of the club's old surroundings of Upton Park stadium, while other may suggest that West Ham is not one of the city's so called big clubs. But as of the end of 2022-23 season, all must call West Ham a European champion.
Barring being crowned Championship's champions and getting promoted back to the first division/Premier League, the 2-1 win over Fiorentina in the Conference League final was the club's first title a 1979-80 FA Cup and a first European title since a 1964-65 UEFA Cup Winner's Cup. That means, rightfully ignoring the 1999 intertoto Cup.
A look at West Ham's glorious past – especially the 60's - revels its magnificent academy and the brilliant players that came through the ranks over the years: Bobby Moore was the only English captain to raise the World Cup in 1966, as he has also captained West Ham for 14 season (1962-74). Fellow teammates in England and West Ham were Martin Peters (302 appearances and 81 goals) and Geoff Hurst (401 appearances and 180 goals, including a hat-trick in the 1966 final). Billy Bonds took over the armband from Moore at West Ham and wore it for 10 out of 21 years of service. Trevor Brooking played in East London no fewer than 18 years. And, of course. Mark Noble, who retired in 2022 after 18 seasons of loyal service.
Not always was the club able to enjoy the development of its brilliant young players over long spells of time, as it was forced to sell players in order to balance the books. Notable names on that list are Rio Ferdinand (Leeds United and later Manchester United), Michael Carrick (Manchester United) and Joe Cole and Frank Lampard, both went on the achieve titles, glory and England caps at Chelsea.
