关于 瓦伦西亚
There were some glorious times during late 90’s and beginning of the new millennium causing great anticipation for much success and titles to come, followed by financial hard times that left question marks of continued operations and its place at the top of the Spanish La Liga, as the club was forced to continually sell its top players in order to survive. Yet Valencia CF has bounced back, it’s excellent youth academy producing top class talent and its first team is right up there, where it belongs.
Like many clubs in Spain and Italy during late 19th, early 20th centuries, Valencia Football Club was founded in 1919 under the influence of British sailors, who played the game in the local port enough to impress a group of local fans, who have decided to name the new club under the name of the city.
In 1923, just four years after inauguration, two major events in Valencia’s history took place: The club has purchased the land that will be used to build the Mestalla Stadium (capacity 17,000) and Valencia first participated in the Copa de Espana, a two-legged it lost to Sporting Gijon. The new stadium was ready in May 1923 and has remained its home ever since.
After the Spanish Civil War ended, and under the presidency of an army officer, Valencia won three championships in the 40’s and two Copa del Rey, who were then much more prestigious than league titles.
During the 50’s and the 60’s, Valencia knew some success in Europe, mainly playing the Fairs Cup, who was then an invitation only tournament, winning it twice, in 1961-62 and 1962-63. By 1970, Argentinian and Spanish legend Alfredo di Stefano became Valencia’s manager (the first of his three terms at the club), a season that ended in the first Primera Division title since the 40’s. di Stefano came back for a second term in 1979-80 and led Valencia to a penalty shootout win over Arsenal at the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. The star of the team was Argentina’s 1978 World Cup winner Mario Kempes, known as “Matador”, who became a club legend and later on served as Valencia’s ambassador.
Valencia’s claim to fame during recent times and its golden period was under management of first Hector Cooper and later Rafael Benitez. Cooper led the club to the final of the 1999–2000 UEFA Champions League, which it lost to Real Madrid, and again in 2000-2001, which it lost to Bayern Munich. That team was full of exciting players, who would lay the foundation to what was yet to come: goalkeeper Santiago Canizares, Argentinians Claudio Lopez and later Pablo Aimar and Roberto Ayala, Ruben Baraja, Vicente Rodríguez and Brazilian Fabio Aurelio. Benitez replaced Cooper as head coach and the results were two magnificent La Liga titles in 2001-02 and 2003-04, in addition to the 2003-04 UEFA Cup.
Valencia still play its home matches in the renovated 49,500-seat Mestalla. In 2008-09 it was announced that the club would move to a 75,000-seat Nou Mestalla in time for the 2009-10 season. However, construction on the new stadium stopped due to financial difficulties. It was later announced that the new Mestalla would have a reduced capacity of 65,000 seats, but work has yet to be completed.
Valencia’s most capped player is Fernando Gómez Colomer, who recorded 552 appearances between 1983-1998. The club’s all-time top goal scorer is Edmundo “Mundo” Suarez, who scored 238 goals in 210 matches between 1939-1950.
The club looks outside Spain for players’ development and international expansion and in recent years it has opened two youth academies in North America – in Miami and New York
