关于 乌迪内斯
Two names jump out as soon as one mentions the Udinese: Brazilian maestro Zico and local hero Antonio Di Natale. The former moved to Udine in what would be his only (short) European adventure and left fans grasping for air in amazement, the latter played 12 glorious seasons in black and white and is still adored after retirement. There were others, of course, like German hit man Oliver Bierhoff, but those two stand head above shoulders.
Udinese was established in 1896 and won a scudetto its first year, but the title was never recognized as its own. Since then, the club came close to win it all in mid-50’s, and that is about it.
In 1976 the club recorded a turning point, when it moved into the new, 20,000-seat Stadio Friuli. Now known as Dacia Arena, it’s capacity stands at 25, 144-seat after extensive renovations. Also new at the time was a coach, Massimo Giacomini, who advocated the Dutch total football, which called for high pressing, passing game performed by highly skilled technical players. Fans were happy off the field, players flew high on it, but titles were not meant to be, other than another promotion to Serie A. In 1980 all hell broke loose, when Udinese, among others, was accused as being part of the illegal football pools. It took a long and hard legal battle, but the club was nor forced to relegate.
1983 was the year that Arthur Antunes Coimbra, AKA Zico, came aboard. And not only that, but the Brazilian rejected AC Milan and inter in order to come to Udinese. On the field he did it all: score incredible goals, kept the fans happy, and helped Udinese to higher places in the table. Off the field, he also did it all, as home matches were always a sellout. However, during his second season he got injured. When he came back, he was no longer the same player. In two seasons, Zico played 39 matches for Udinese, scoring 22 goals and capturing everyone’s heart.
Other than 3 wonderful seasons in mid-90’s where Oliver Bierhoff was the main man in the middle of the attack, Udinese had to wait almost 20 years and move up and down between the leagues until the next great player. And when Antonio Di Natale arrived in 2004, it was simply a love affair. By the time he retired from football in 2016, Di Natale has played in 385 matches for the The Zebrette (Little Zebras), scoring 191 times.
And maybe another story will reflect about the club: in 2016, the starting 11 of Udinese wore 11 different shirts from 11 seasons in their 1-2 Serie A defeat by Lazio. The outfield shirts were all similar, with black and white stripes on the front and black on the back. By the end of the match, the shirts were auctioned for charity.
The biggest rivalry of Udinese used to be the derby with Triestina, but the neighboring club has long been gone from Serie A. Other big rivalries include a historic one with Hellas Verona, Napoli (after violent fights between the clubs’ ultras in 2010, and with Bologna.
Udinese won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2000. The team has never won the Serie A or the Coppa Italia.
