The New England Patriots play football in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is located 21 miles (34 km) southwest of downtown Boston and 20 miles (32 km) northeast of downtown Providence, Rhode Island.
The following winter after Boston had been offered a franchise locals were allowed to submit ideas for the Boston football team's official name. The most popular choice – and the one that was ultimately selected – was the "Boston Patriots". Immediately thereafter, artist Phil Bissell of The Boston Globe developed the "Pat Patriot" logo.
The Patriots were original members of the American Football League but joined the NFL in the 1970 merger of the two leagues. The team changed its name from the original Boston Patriots after relocating to Foxborough in 1971 and no longer being directly in Boston.
The Patriots have an illustrious history as far as participation and success in pro football’s ultimate prize the Super Bowl. They have made it to the Bowl eight times, six since 2000. The Patriots have since become one of the most successful teams in NFL history, winning twelve AFC East titles in 14 seasons since 2001, without a losing season in that period and setting numerous records within that time frame.
Their four Super Bowl victories came initially in a four year period – 2001, 2003 and 2004 and most recently in 2014. One extra and remarkable feature was that this last saw the Patriots assume the record of six Super Bowls reached by a head coach-quarterback tandem – in this case Bill Bellichick and Tom Brady as well as being the first tandem to win the Super Bowl 14 years after the first.
Many great players have featured for the Patriots over the years so let us review just a few. Tom Brady is thought of as the best quarterback of all time. With three Super Bowl wins, a perfect regular season, an NFL-record 50 touchdown passes in a single season, and a career rating of 93.5, Brady has the best winning percentage of any QB in the Super Bowl era and the best TD:INT ratio of any QB ever.
John Hannah, widely regarded as the best offensive lineman in the history of the NFL, was a rock on the line for New England for 13 seasons. He was named to nine Pro Bowls, the most in team history, and seven All-Pro teams, also the most in team history. He made eight straight Pro Bowls from 1978-1985.
Andre Tippett was without doubt the best pass rusher, playmaker and overall defensive presence in team history. Tippett is the franchise leader in sacks (100) and fumble recoveries (19) and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
Mike Haynes electrified the NFL as a cover corner and return man. Those that knew him said there wasn't a receiver in the league who could outrun him or a quarterback in the league who could throw on him.
