关于 博阿维斯塔FC
There are periods in the history of a football club – especially when the club is not one of its country’s elite professionally and sound financially – where it all comes together. And then there are periods when it all crashes down and the only thing left to do is to try and bounce back.
Boavista FC is Porto’s other football club. Not nearly as big as Porto, ways behind it in number of silverware won, not even getting close in the number of European magic nights and lacking considerably in number of fans. But Boavista is one of Portugal’s most stable football clubs, a prominent part of the Primeira Liga.
Only 7.5 Km separates Boavista’s Estadio do Bessa from Porto’s Estadio do Dragao, but those are a very long 7.5 Km, a distance that represents the difference between a stable, first division football club in Portugal and a local powerhouse, a European perennial contender. Well, not always a stable, first division club really, but one Portugal’s major club, right after the Big Three of Porto, Benfica and Sporting.
Boavista FC’s foundation was based on a gift. It was two brothers of English descent living in the city of Porto, that were given a football by their father in 1903. The boys organized football matches in the textile factory they were working, and the establishment of a club was under way. The new team was called The Boavista Footballers. Seven years later, the name of the new club was changed to Boavista Futebol Clube.
The club had to wait 60 plus years until it won trophies. The 70’s were a very successful times for Boavista, marked with a first Portugal Cup in 1975. By 1979, the club had won its third cup of the decade. It had to wait 13 years for a fourth cup and five more years for cup number five. By the late 90’s, Boavista was ready to make its challenge on its first championship.
By the time the club finally won its first and only championship in 2000-01, it became only the second outside the Big Three to win the title and the first since 1945-46. It won it all by achieving 77 points, 1 more than Porto, who came in 2nd, winning 23 matches to Porto’s 24, having a 41 goal-difference to Porto’s 46, but having won twice against Porto during the regular season: 1-0 and 4-0.
Next season, Boavista qualified for UEFA Champions League. During group stage, the club finished second behind Liverpool and advanced to the second group stage, which it finished 3rd after Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
The local derby with FC Porto is known as Derby da Invicta. The rivalry is a historical one and is mainly supported by Boavista fans.
Boavista appearance leader is Bolivian Erwin Sánchez, who played 219 matches between 1992-2004. The club’s all-time top goals scorer is Nigerian Richard Daddy Owubokiri, who scored 57 goals in three seasons (1991-1994) in Northern Portugal.
Since 1911, Boavista, who play in a black and white checkered uniform, play their home matches in 28,263-seat Estadio do Bessa.
